As a healer in the service of Pelor, Brother Steve did his best to help those in need, living primarily on the graces of those he treated. It was not an extravagant living, but it was Pelor’s Will. As time passed, Brother Steve grew restless living in the confines of New Thaylus, yearning for something different, something grand.

Not all of Brother Steve’s patients were grateful for his services. One such patient was the nasty, bed-ridden old lady by the name of Grettle. Grettle insulted Steve’s abilities as a healer after many treatments and potions did nothing to cure her affliction. Not to be deterred, Brother Steve continued to see Grettle for some time, determined to help the woman. To no avail, the crotchety hag never showed any signs of being on the mend, and Steve’s resolve crumbled. More particularly, he became angry.

He felt as if Pelor had forsaken him, though the magic still came to him with the same ease that it had for years. Why would Pelor magic not cure Grettle of her debilitating illness? Shortly after conversing with Morbius on the streets of New Thaylus, he was met with yet another of Grettle’s verbal onslaughts. Trying to suppress his anger, he was reminded of Morbius’ words, that mortals are to accept the natural order and be released of their earthly bonds when their time is due. Steve reflected on this and was led to believe that Grettle was foolishly hanging on to this mortal coil. Rage suppressed and with morbid calm, Brother Steve proceeded to chok the life from Grettle. The following morning when praying to his deity, Brother Steve felt no answer to his calls; Pelor had forsaken him. Contemplating this, Brother Steve began praying once more, but to Nerull, and once again felt the touch of the divine with him.
